Back to underwater trip after 2 months land trip. The snorkeling in Misool was so lucky to see 5 mobula rays, and the 2 dives in Raja 4 is still very wonderful, schooling jack and surgeon fish, a walking shark, 3 grey reef sharks (a little bit far), a wabegong and other reef sharks (too oftern to see), various clown fish, moray eel, and other fish. Let’s explore the wonderful Indonesia #paditv #snorkeling #rajaampat #diving #scuba #gopro #indonesia #underwaterphotography #underwater #fish

Sadly, I was given this footage by a tourist visiting my home and place of work, Bunaken National Park. I deeply regret not being present on the dive, otherwise I would have taken an immediate action against this diver, however the tourist had the quick thinking to record this heinous act and pass it on to us. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Here you can see this diver – allegedly a local Indonesian diver – (after his dive guide sat on the coral wall to pose for a photo) grabs onto a fleeing green turtle. The turtle appears to be quite small, possibly between 30-40 years old, and previously unharmed by fishing gear or ocean plastics. The diver is wearing full-fingered gloves and carries a knife, which is banned in all marine parks here in Indonesia. He proceeds to hold on to the turtle, preventing her from swimming away or swimming to the surface to breathe air. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ It was reported that the diver eventually let go, and this terrified turtle escaped. We don’t know her level of traumatisation, or if she suffered irreparable damage from lack of oxygen, but even if she survived and recovered, her treatment is still illegal and immoral. This diver will carry on harassing and harming marine life until somebody stops him. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ I ask you all to identify this diver and call to the dive centre to discipline his and the dive guide’s actions. I ask the Bunaken National Marine Park to ban this diver/guide from working in or entering Bunaken waters. I ask the other fellow dive guides and instructors to publicly declare their opposition to this behaviour, and to swear an oath not to copy or allow such behaviour that endangers our reefs and our marine life. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ It is our responsibility to take care of the place we protect and enjoy every single day. We need these reefs and these animals to live, in order to make a future in scuba diving for our children, and to preserve the beautiful country of Indonesia. If we do not stop this behaviour, we can expect dive tourism to suffer and die, just as our coral reefs and animals will. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ I know that there are so many respectful dive guides in Bunaken, and this behaviour is rare. So we must stand up and stop this together. ⁣⁣

A lot of these tiny islands were bombed in WWII, some actually carved and split open as they are relatively small. The Japanese would disguise their ships as small islands sometimes and as there can be string currents in Raja Ampat the islands would sometimes have wakes, making them look like boats. War hits everything in our world. On this day it’s important to remember the suffering and loss of the people who died to protect our futures, but it’s also important to remember those on the other side, the soldiers and the citizens that were whipped up into a war machine that they couldn’t control. It happens today all around the world. It is also vitally important to remember the suffering of all the animals both in service and out of service, the habitat as that were needlessly destroyed without a thought and, lastly, the islands that were split in half in Indonesia. It may seem insignificant, but there was also great loss in marine life and habitat with the increased marine operations. If you ever have the chance, go and visit and dive these places, they are superb. • • • • •1/250 f16 iso500 • •Canon 1DXii – Canon EF 8-15mm fisheye – Subal housing, Ikelite strobes, Zen dome • • • #photography #rajaampat #westpapua #jacks #bigeyetrevally #underwater #wildlife #scuba #illgrammers #agameoftones #1dxmarkii #divephotography #keepitwild #stayandwander #lonelyplanet #theoutbound #finditliveit #exploremore #bestvacations #natgeo #travelstoke #wonderful_places #freedive @suunto #suuntodive #suuntoD5 #subal
